The signs are hopeful

Many places round here end in 'hope'.
The origin is Anglo-Saxon meaning side valley and is pronounced 'up'.
Apart from Stannup and Rookup there are
Harehope - Hairup
Middlehope - Midlup
Burnhope - Burnup
Bollihope - Bollyup
and my favourite Shittlehope - Shitlup.

Other hopeless cases are:-
SHEILA
NICKY
ZAK
BEV
ROYALLD
LEE
VEYSEL
CINDI
LUTHER AND LISA
ANTIDOTE3

Canon EOS 300D Digital Rebel
1/125s f/8.0 at 55.0mm iso100 full exif

other sizes: small medium large auto

THIS was the best laff I'd had all day!! I loved the lesson in pronunciations =)
And I think my favorite is your favorite =)
Now anytime I see "-hope" on the end of anything I will remember this!

beautiful scene, and good use of the "hope" theme, liked your explanation of the place names!

As you would imagine a lot of the English names came to Australia with the First Fleet, but the amazing thing is that within 30 yrs of settlement our direlect had been established to what it is today. Here it remains Stanhope, not Stanup :>)
