Ogoh ogoh are papier-mache figures, mostly demons, taken from Hindu mythology. They are built by local villagers for the Ngrupuk parade, which takes place on the eve of Nyepie (the day of Silence, marking the start of the new year). They are carried through town with much hoopla before being thrown into the sea or burned as a symbol of self-purification.
