Dartmoor Devon: Steeped in History

view map

Welcome to my experience of Dartmoor, I hope you'll stay for a while and take a look at some of the images I've taken here over the years: In this desolate place (pictured above) there is evidence of habitation going back maybe 3000 years or more, hailing from a time in which the climate must have been more benign. The stone rows date back to the Bronze and Iron Ages. The Dartmoor landscape is scattered with these enigmatic remains which are often difficult to reach other than by hiking and are hard to find without an Ordnance Survey Map. However, here at Merrivale on the main road between Tavistock and Princetown they are just a few hundred metres off the roadway.
Don't be fooled by the fine weather and lovely skies in my photos here - conditions like these are very much the exception and Dartmoor's fickle weather conditions need to be treated with great respect. If you should get lost - and it's easier than you might think in the middle of the moor - just remember this simple rule: all rivers lead off the Moor and to places where you'll find habitation.

Like the colour in this image. The exposure is well balanced with great foreground interest. Excellent comp. Vote

I like this photo, the colours are great. I love to walk on the moor though we really do have good weather on dartmoor in the summer it has a reputaion for changeable wether which is worse than it deserves!!
