Day Five

For those of you who don't remember, Independence was the home town of Harry Truman. Honestly, neither of us knew much about this President, but by the end of the day, we were very much enlightened. We started out with a tour of his home. It was very unassuming. After the presidency he retired there and pretty much lived a simple life. Things were a lot different in those days. The interior of the house looked like your grandmother's house.

When we got to the presidential library there was a guided tour just about to start. It lasted over two hours and was excellent. The guide gave the history of Harry Truman from top to bottom. One interesting thing I didn't know was that he was an officer in the artillery during the First World War and actually was in combat in France. We really enjoyed the tour and the museum. Very nicely done.

The last stop of the day was the 1859 Marshall's house and jail. It was interesting to see that the Marshall and his family lived in the same building as the jail. The most famous inmate was Frank James. He "retired" in 1882 and spent two weeks in the jail and was quite a celebrity.

Today's photo is of the Truman Presidential Library.
