Today was a special day for us. We visited what I call the holy grail of Lewis and Clark history. Behind us, protected from weather and vandals by a frame, is Captain Clark's name scratched into the side of a sandstone rock outcrop along the Yellowstone River which he named Pompey's Pillar in honor of Sacagawea's infant son John Baptiste. This is the only item which was left behind by the Lewis and Clark expedition (2 1/2 years) that is still visible. That makes it a very cool thing. You can speculate where the expedition mambers might have walked but you know for sure that Captain Clark stood right there in order to carve his name.
