One of the demonstrations we do at Fort Clatsop is tanning hides. Every year hunters donate hides to be used for this program. This is a long arduous process that starts with soaking and scraping each hide. You have to scrape both sides and it takes a lot of effort. Here Matt is in the process of scraping a hide in preparation for tanning. It gathers quite a bit of attention from the visitors because most people have no idea how it works. In the end you get a nice soft piece of leather from which to make moccasins or clothes. I personally have never tried it. I don't plan to, either. But, Matt and Susan are absolutely addicted to doing it and they are good at it. It is fun to watch.
