June 7, 2010

We stayed in Wetherall last night (east a little from Carlisle). Today we did a bunch of touring which included Hadrian's wall. Again, I found it interesting because it is 2000 years old (give or take). The whole wall stretches across England. The Romans were trying to keep the Scots out of England. Apparently from my limited knowledge of history imparted by our lovely guide Roseanne, the Scots and the English have never really sat down and hashed this whole thing out. That is not likely to happen any time soon, as far as I can see. I just hope the English keep making beer and the Scots keep making whisky.

Good question. The Romans built the wall to delineate their territory not to keep them out.

I never understood how the romans thought that small of a wall would keep people out. How tall was it originally?
