I got my computer back from Fry's today. They said the hard disk was bad so they replaced it and reloaded the Vista. I ran upstairs and hooked it up and sure enough it started up without a hitch. Now, here is the rub. First thing, it takes days to get all the updates to Vista downloaded and installed. When I got that finished I noticed that the system seemed to hang for significant lengths of time. After screwing with it for several days, I packed the darn thing up and took it back to Fry's.
