Today was the 25th Wings Over Houston Air Show. This is a very good one. The boys and I have attended many times. I think I might have gone to the first one. At that time it was a pretty informal affair. Anyway, I had a field day because it was the first air show I had the 5D Mk2 and the 100-400 lens at. It takes some getting used to under the conditions. The sun was in a bad position. The show line is north-south (that's where the runway is so that's where the show line is). So the morning shooting is into the light. I wandered as far south in the viewing area as I could to try getting a little favorable sun, but it was hard. One other thing I found out is that the metering system is very inconsistent against a pure blue sky and that the airplanes are generally underexposed. Also noted quite a bit of vignetting, which I don't understand. With all that said, I went home and downloaded my photos. I didn't realize how much fun I had - there were 2569 photos on the cards. Now I have to slog through and keep the good stuff.

BTW-this Fat Albert. The Marines operate this C-130 as part of the Blue Angels. This was the first time I had seen the JATO take off. Very impressive!

You get about 2 seconds to shoot this. Not much time to fart around with settings. Maybe next time I will ask the Marines if they could hold that pose for a couple minutes.

Exposure looks acceptable. I would've given +2/3 to +1 full stop exposure compensation to open up the shadows under the wings and stab.

I have problems with the exposure on plane shots as well.
On all settings, centre weighted also.
Filling the frame with all plane helps most.

Carl-it was fun meeting up with you out there. I did get quite a few good ones. I am poking through them now. Lots are getting trashed, of course. Almost all airborne stuff from the morning is poor. Sun angles make a big difference. Wingy - I have started posting some in the Events gallery.

iwas good to see you john! i owe you a beer. the vignetting will happen when you have the aperature open wide and you'll see it really well against a solid color like blue. my 20mm is does it a lot. as for the wonky exposure, set it to center weighted. or just get a nikon. :O)

great shot, all things you mentioned considered it is really good! Hope you plan on doing a whole gallery from the show?
