Ginny and I were not scheduled at Fort Clatso today, so we decided to knock around the area for a while. Among the places we went was the old Bumble Bee tuna cold storage facility. To put things in perspective, Astoria was a center of tuna and salmon canning up until the eighties. When we went on our honeymoon in 1974, we visited the Bumble Bee cannery which was really humming. There were other canning companies as well. If you go down to the waterfront today, there isn't a single cannery operating. The only relic left is the 39th street pier which has been partially developed into a canning museum. So, 35 years later we are back again.
