Last night we tried our first Skype video call. It was with Ginny's sister and nieces in Corvallis, OR. It actually worked out very well. It was a lot of fun. We used the HP mini which has a built in web cam. I wanted to get set up on the big computer upstairs, so I hooked up an old web cam I had bought for an experiment several years ago. It was 640 x 480 and the image was terribly noisy. So I said the heck with that and headed to Frys to get a better one. Holy cow, have things changed with web cams. I ended up with a Logitech Pro 9000. It has a 2 megapixel sensor, Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus, very good control software and a built in microphone. All for 80 bucks. I hooked it up and was stunned at the quality. SO I decided to do a self portrait. This was taken in very low light. I am really pleased with this gadget. I might take it out to the airport to try using it as an inspection tool. I think this one would work. 2 megapixels, jeez, my first digital camera (Ricoh RDC-300) was only 640X480 (0.3 megapixels).
