Celebration

It is not everyday that you get published in the New England Journal of Medicine! Lot of long hours, sweat, and perseverance
has paid off and hopefully our findings can make a difference.

Picture is the lead author reflection over a video that I did to explains the findings of the article. You can click high lighted words below to play the video on burdensome transitions for NH residents with advanced dementia.

End of Life: Burdensome transitions from Brown PAUR on Vimeo.

Health care transitions, such as moves from the nursing home to the hospital, can result in medical errors, lack of care coordination, and for persons with advanced dementia – emotional distress and agitation. A new study finds that although such transitions are not consistent with goals of providing dying patients with comfort, a fifth of them experience at least one during their last three months. Congratulations on being published. Of course, people with dementia decompensate when their environment is so drastically changed. We all need to rethink how to care for people in the end stage of life, IMHO.

The article was in our morning Times Picayune in New Orleans. I was not surprised to see that Louisiana was 37 percent. I wish I had known these Medicare stats when my father-in-law and sister were in the Nursing Home in LaPlace, Louisiana. No wonder they were always taking them to the hospital---yet, when they really needed to go, they didn't take them. They got 3 times the money for a patient who had been in the hospital--what a racket.

Very nice work, Joan. And, not to worry. We may get a little something at the end of next week, but it won't get to you.
