Birds Making a Living in Florida

The bird species in the galleries below represent about 30 percent of the
total number of aves that make their home in, or migrate through, the state of Florida.

Florida has very diverse habitats which different species of bird seem to favor. Most of the species
of birds I have observed and documented thus far can be found in southwest Florida with a concern
on occasion for the time of year or a particularly accommodating venue (food source).
Every image is of a bird that was photographed in the wild.

Each image indicates where the bird was photographed, at what time of year, with additional info in the exif data.

Barbara, The Reddish Egret in this case ( http://www.pbase.com/jkrnm5/image/86933488 ) was very interesting to watch and shoot, regrettably at a distance of nearly 200 feet. The bird was still surprisingly very skittish of my presence keeping a keen eye on me as it was hunting for its meal. The wind was negligible on the beach, but was very brisk coming through the channel where the shot was taken. The lighting and wind was indeed very good for the water action. Most of the birds I encounter at LKSP are very wary of people possibly due to abuse of some sort, or perhaps as migratory just aren't accustomed to seeing people. I've had the Snowy Egret allow me within ten feet of it on a couple of occasions while the vast majority of birds aren't so accommodating. I've also noted the Snowy Egret to be extremely aggressive toward the Little Blue Heron and occasionally towards its own kind as well.

Treespec, By clicking on an individual image of your choice, you can see the camera used (D80) with additional information in the EXIF data. I took my first pictures in Florida with a Pentax K1000 in 1982. My other traditional SLR used before getting the digital SLR was a Canon A1. I may get around to scanning some of the images taken with them to the computer some day. If I ever choose to get another camera, you will have the opportunity to know. -- Bob
