Contemporary Teracotta Warriors

Chatsworth House, Derbyshire

Sculpture by artist Yue Minjun from 2006. The fixed, cynical grimace of each identical figure is a comment on the oppressive political environment in China - according to the guidebook to the artwork currently on display - the "Beyond Limits" exhibition. As Jay Levin points put below, the work also has echoes of the famous terracotta warriors, one of China's main tourist attractions.

This is a terrific image, John. The expressions on their face are awesome, but I discovered why. The sculptor, Yue Minjun, is a contemporary Chinese artist best known for oil paintings depicting himself in various settings, frozen in laughter. Also, this set of 25 bronze figures entitled Contemporary Terracotta Warriors represent Minjun’s visual response to the 8,000-strong Qin dynasty terracotta warriors (221-206 BC), one of China’s world-famous cultural attractions.
