Raspberry Pyrausta Moth (Pyrausta signatalis)
Hodges #5034

Kanata, Ontario

I first saw this species in my garden in August 2009. So far I have counted at least two in my backyard this season (2010). When I checked to see what it feeds on, it all made sense: I have lots of beebalm (Monarda sp.) in my back garden to attract hummingbirds, never dreaming that it would attract such a lovely moth!

Aren't they beauties!!! I just love their colour and pattern. I remember years ago thinking all moths were grey and brown!! What a mistake. They are as colourful and varied as butterflies (well, they ARE all lepidoptera!). Great, great shot.V
