Arrowhead Spiketail (Cordulegaster obliqua)

Larose Forest

While participating in the Larose Forest Bioblitz, one of the first insects I noticed as I got out of the car was a large dragonfly hanging from some vegetation along the roadside. I first saw it from the side, and the yellow stripes on the thorax made me think it was a darner - specifically, a Springtime Darner. I took a few photos to document the shape of the stripes, an essential feature in identifying darners, but then when I walked around him to photograph him from the top I realized it wasn't a darner at all! The arrow-shaped spots along the abdomen were quite a shock, and confirmed its identity as an Arrowhead Spiketail - a rare dragonfly in the Ottawa area!!
