John S I remember taking the bus from Saddle Brook or driving with my mom Jane McClinton to shop at the pork store and vegetable stands on the streets, and then going to Port Arthur for lunch before going home (egg drop soup and chicken chow mein). I lived on Getty Avenue until I was 6 or maybe 9? probably 9 we moved to saddle brook in 1950 or perhaps it really was 1953? when my sister Ellen was born and my mother did not want to tell my father she was pregnant with her 5th child, one of which aborted, because he might have thought he could not afford the 99 dollar per month mortgage payment.

I also had my first photo with Santa at Quackenbush when I was 5 in 194. We lived in garden apartments on Sperber Road in Fair Lawn. Does anyone know when the store closed?

We had 4 movie theaters to choose from. For 25 cents you could spend the afternoon at the Majestic. Meyer Brothers had a book dept at the rear of the store and I would get to purchase a Spin and Marty or a Tom Swift novel. Does anyone remember a bowling alley named McNairs? It had hand pin spotters and was on the second floor.

I worked in Woolworth's and Kresgee's while I was in High school(ST.John"s)used to walk there after school,work till 9,walk to the bus terminal on Broadway and take a bus to South Paterson where I would walk a block to home .Sure would not do that now.How different times were then.After graduation I worked on lower Van Houten St.in the old mills along the river for a textile company as a secretary.I would take a bus to and from work every day.Went from there to the office of Lobel's Factory on Courtland St.near St,Joseph's Hospital.Areas of Paterson were so different back then.You weren't afraid to go anywhere by yourself then.

I remember when you could walk on any back street in Paterson day or night and be safe. We abandoned the city when it became dangerous. Why didn't we fight back? It's happening somewhere right now. A new low culture is taking over. Look at Passaic too. Someday, our bustling malls will be ghost towns if we don't take action. Our older houses are being turned into multi-family dwellings for people who don't understand 'nice.'

The Chinese reataurant was called the New Port Arthur Restaurant. There was also Whelen's where you could get lunch or a banana split, and Grant's, another small department store with a lunch counter. There was also The Mart and Stenshaver's shoe store. On Market Street was Fenster's knitting store, the First National Bank and Scordato's restaurant. i remember all of these places and another store Innever went into because it was a men's store, but I remember the name, Charles W. Elbow. Also Bond's where my father got his suits with two pair of pants. Oh, the memories! I lived in Clifton and Main Street, Paterson was our shopping "mall". Does anyone remember the singing policeman who used to sing Irish songs while he directed traffic? I was also fascinated by whoever wrote "Jesus Saves" in chalk with beautiful handwriting on the streets and sidewalks. Incidentally, the blind man who used to sit near Quackenbush's was not a begger. He sold the Paterson Evening News, several copies of which he held on his lap and he had a cup attached to his coat for the money. I never saw him begging.

My mom sang a solo on the staircase with Hawthorne High School. I loved going to Quakenbush with my grandmother from Hawthorne for lunch. Great memories.

I still have my photo of me on Santa's lap. My mother worked at Knickerbocker's where they had homemade chocolates and candy. We used to get our chocolate rabbits there for Easter.

The Jacobs dept. store still has the nicest staircase and building structure of any building in New Jersey.

I loved the cartoon viewers by the toy department of Quackenbush's and the three 5 and 10s, Woolworth's, Kreske's, and W.T.Grant. Do you remember Mr. Peanut, who was always hawking the product outside the store, or the blind guy who used to beg on Main Street? I can't imagine what would happen to the poor guy if tried to beg for a living now. If anyone had tried to hurt or steal from him back then, I doubt if they would have survived. I used to live on Lower Main Street and I can remember downtown Paterson as early as 1948. Some other businesses you might remember are, The Port Arthur Chinese Restaurant, Harry's luncheonette on West Broadway, Jacob's Dept. Store, Meyer Bros., of course, Knickerbocker Ice Cream, Barney's Furniture Store, Silk City Pharmacy, Denn's Pharmacy, Konnors Clothing Store.

OH My God. I have a picture of me on Santa Claus lap @ Quackenbush probably about 1953 or so. I loved going there to see Santa Claus at Christmas. They used to say "Downtown Paterson Has Everything". I remember the smell of roasting peanuts coming from the Planters Peanuts Store and the Mr. Peanut statue outside the store. Those were the good time for the city.
