One of the most popular legends associated with the Mid-Autumn (Lantern) Festival, the story of Chang Erh tells the myth that the earth once had ten suns circling over it and each took its turn to illuminate the earth. One day, all ten suns appeared together, scorching the earth with their heat. The emperor Yao asked for help from Hou Yi, a legendary archer who succeeded in shooting down nine out of ten suns that were causing havoc on earth. He was rewarded with the elixir of immortality and for his heroic deeds, he became chief but became tyrannical as time passed. His beautiful wife Chang Erh, drank the elixir of life to save the people from her husband’s tyrannical rule. After drinking it, she found herself floating and realizing that her husband would be angry she fled to the moon.
