Mountains look big when they are far away. It’s not until you try to walk to one that you discover that they are enormous! After another delicious breakfast prepared by Cindy at the Mosier House, we said our good-byes to the Columbia River and headed out to Mount Hood.
The drive was pleasant and it was nice having this giant standing watch in the distance. A windy 12 mile dirt and rock road led us to one of the trailheads for the Timberline Trail. Yet again, I was surprised by what a rental car could do! The hike was wonderful, winding through dense forest, climbing up a talus field, and then meandering around above tree line. The summit of Mount Hood stood above us, never getting any closer. The map claimed that this excursion only covered 3 miles roundtrip. My legs claim 30 but they may be still under the influence of yesterday’s 12 mile adventure. Renu and I lingered as much as we walked which I find completely justified for such a grand setting. And, it was enriching feeling so small once again.

Tonight, we take a nap in the Mattey House, an 1800’s Victorian overlooking a vineyard with tomorrow promising exploration, but more of the gastronomic type.
