October-28-2004

I called in a personal day at work today because I've been feeling out of sorts. It hasn't been anything terrible but it's just one of those things that is tough to put a finger on.
I took a walk at the Great Swamp this morning. As I strolled along the elevated walkways, I realized that I've been living in this area for a full year. The first time I came to the swamp, it was chilly and the leaves were changing. Since then, autumn, winter, spring, and summer have all passed. Many life events have done the same for family and friends as well as for myself. I guess transition will always be a theme in life. But unlike for this leaf where so many things are passive...it is subject to the whims of a strong wind to knock it to the ground...so many of our transitions are under our own control. That's a good and bad thing, I suppose. We are masters of our own destiny to some extent, but then we have to take responsibility for the consequences of our decisions. I find this fact at times paralyzing. For me, perhaps more answers will lie in autumn, or winter...maybe spring...perhaps summer...

Sometimes I find living in the moment surrendering to what is helps. And enjoy the journey as it unfolds.
