Here we are driving up to the 11,141 foot elevation on Mauana Loa where the road ends at the Mauna Loa Weather Observatory. It is a very rough road, but is doable in even a rental car! Here we are looking back across the "saddle" in the middle of the island back over to Mauana Kea and its observatories. In the forground is a'a lava, which is very sharp and rough.
