PVC became a superior alternative for drainage pipes in the early 1960s and the market for clay pipes plummeted. At the same time, highly uniform and more durable sewage pipes made of cement killed off that part of the market too.

When burnt in the furnaces, the brownish-black clay gets deep red as they harden. The pipes on this rack were left for drying, but it seems like they never made it through the kilns.
