The early pioneers in the field of motor sports must have been a bunch of crazy guys. Driving around this track in small and rickety racing cars at speeds up to 200 kph must have required nerves of steel. The banking at the extremes is sixty degrees and the smooth concrete together with rain must have been scary indeed. Safety for the drivers cannot simply have been an issue at that time and reading racing stories from the 1920's, it is apparent that fatalities were all too common.

Without really knowing anything about why the racing track was built here, its name gives that "we must have one too" after similar tracks were built all around Europe at that time. The Autódromo Nacional in Sitges, Spain was built by Germans in 1922, apparently inspired by the famous AVUS track in Berlin and the Grand Prix was run here in 1923.

It seems however that it all ended up as a fiasco - after the GP, no more significant events were ever run here and after some motor bike events in the early 1930s, the Spanish civil war seems to have put it all to an end. I've read notes that some event occurred in the 1950s, but since then, the silence has fallen over the Sitges Terramar. The all concrete design seems well-built and must have been very modern by that time and despite the seventy-five years that have passed and some cracks and growing vegetation, the concrete is in remarkably good shape.
