Is This A Picture Of The World Record Bass?

"There is no doubt in my mind it's the world-record bass," said Bill Baab, who retired from The Augusta Chronicle in 2000 after 35 years as its outdoors editor - and who helped authenticate the mysterious snapshot.

Baab knows plenty about Perry and his bass.

In a recent book, Forbes senior writer Monte Burke refers to Baab as "the world's leading authority on the story of George Perry's fish, and the story's most tenacious guardian."

The photo, likely taken near the post office and general store in Helena, Ga., was found by Waycross, Ga., resident Jerry Johnson while going through his late aunt's belongings.

We would like to hear from anyone who might identify "the smoking man" or the little boy.

My answer to your question is "NO". I offer these observations: By using ratios of the male skeleton, the length from knuckles to elbow vs total height is 4.75. Example: I am 5'6.5"(66.5") tall and and my knuckle to elbow length is 14". 66.5/14=4.75 This ratio is petty consistent through out the population. George Perry's world record wide mouth bass was 32.5" in length. Bases on this "the smoking man" in the picture would have to be over 7'2". Is "the smoking man" over 7'2" tall?

The palmetto bushes in the near background do not grow in Helena, GA. There is no lake that matches the lake in the background in or near Helena, GA. The baseball cap design worn by "the smoking man" was not produced until the 1940's. Further attention should be given to the side arm holster, the structures across the lake and the "L" and reverse "L" marks at the lower right and left of the photo. They may be cropping marks.

My hope is that Misters Bill Baar, Monte Burke, Jerry Johnson, Dazy Perry, Rob Pavey, Forbes and the Whitefish Press reevaluate this photo with my comments in mind and work to withdraw this photo from any association with the Perry catch. Everyone would like to see a photo of the Fish that held the World Record for so many years, but this doesn't appear to be it!
