Berry Wells

Berry Wells, brother of Henry Wells of Jacksonville, Ga. amassed over 10,000 acres of land around what is now Cook, Berrien and Lowndes counties in the 1800's. Unfortunately the Civil War came and he lost most of his wealth. Henry Wells and Molsey Williams were the ancestors of most of the Wellses of Telfair County.[Photo and info courtesy of Linda Meadows of Adel, Ga.]

Hi Gail,

My mother came from this lineage. My maternal GGM was Sarah Wells Gary. It would be wonderful to know where we fit in the picture. I have never been to Jacksonville; although, my GGM lived in Cordele, and my GM, Alberta, frequently talked about her Wells cousins. I remember hearing stories about turpentine trees (?). I hope to travel to the area once I retire from my medical practice next year.

Gail Thompson: (George Wells’ granddaughter) Corey, Bobby, Amina, and Karen, this is one of the Wells Brothers who were the owners of our family. In fact, one of them fathered George. I am pretty close to making a hypothesis as to which one. Amina, I’ve been told that you have the most accurate information. I am very interested in sharing the information that I have with whomever is interested. You can reach me at 206-218-7617.

I wonder if this is applies to the African American Wells also. My ggg-father was Frank Wells he lived in Jacksonville from 1880 to 1920. He had a many acres of land durning this time. I'm looking for a family bible that may have been sold many years ago. If there's anyone still living that might have heard of Frank Wells, his brother's Todd, Franklin, Joe, John and Lucis. Thanks for any information anyone has
