Hallidie Plaza

Andrew Hallidie developed the world's first cable car system and tested the first cable car on Clay Street in 1873. A monument at the site commemorates Hallidie's contribution and marks the Powell Street cable-car turntable.

The cable cars today still operate via the same cable-driven system under the streets of San Francisco
