Chain Saw Art - Aug 04

Tallahassee / Quincy, Florida

About seven years ago or so, this little bear was carved by an old hippie about my age in just a matter of a few moments using a clattering, banging, smoke-belching chain saw. The old hippie lived in a teepee just outside the small campground where I had my tent pitched on the outskirts of Yellowstone National Park. He had been on his way to San Francisco in the sixties, but was so blown away by the raw beauty of the Rockies, he decided to stay, and there he is presumably to this day. I asked if he could carve me a little bear to put on my bookcase, and in a matter of minutes from a big chunk of discarded firewood, I had a treasure that I will cherish until the day I die. It’s one of a kind. Unique. You can’t buy one in Wal-Mart for any price.
Man art. From a chain saw. You can’t put a price on that.

I like the explanations you post with your PAD images. That’s a great picture of a great looking bear and is all the better for knowing his story.
