_MG_8429 Lurker

We finally got a good rain and it has brought out all sorts of lurkers. This one was hiding under the cucumber leaves. I believe it's an Eastern Box Turtle. More about box turtles here, where I learned they emerge after rainstorms and that they are North Carolina's official state reptile: http://www.wildwnc.org/af/boxturtles.html

How beautiful! We have a box turtle that lives somewhere in our neighborhood as well. We have encountered him a few times in our yard. Turtles are wonderfully interesting creatures to watch, both in captivity, and in the wild.

How neat. May be living in your garden all along. Not sure how large their home range is. Came out for a cucumber snack perhaps. 8-)

Is there a body of water nearby other than the rain? The patterns are mesmerising! What a rich golden yellow.
