Sad Time in Western NC

Just a few of the damaged plants around my home. An unusually hot early spring brought forth healthy new growth which was severely damaged by night temperatures in the low 20's. The apple crop is largely decimated. Farmers report there hasn't been so much damage since the '50s. They've tried to save the strawberries by glazing them with ice. Poor farmers and farm workers. The damage we've sustained is mostly cosmetic. I'm really sad for the people whose incomes depend on agricultural products.

Global warming/freezing has alot to answer for. Down here in Australia, we are going through a severe drought and alot of farmers are finding it extremely difficult to survive.

I'm afraid this freeze will skyrocket the price of fruit this summer.

Very sad, indeed. I hate to see this. It is much the same here in TN.

Painful. Is the apple business still a major industry in Henderson county (or, I suppose, was it a major industry last year)?

joli montage et très instructif car on peu y lire les noms des plantes. C'est exellent.

Yes, I agree with Sally here, my garden looked much the same way only worse and much of it has come back. I really feel for the crop farmers though. I think the loss here was in the billions!

How terrible! I wonder if the farmers are going to be able to get some type of government assistance? You can surely bet the cost will be passed on to consumers. Sad indeed...
