DSC05012 Ominous Horse Fly

It swooped by with an ominous buzz and landed on the rock wall. You do not mess with a horse fly, so hoping it would still be there when I went inside for a camera with a telephoto lens so I could maintain a safe distance, I was happy this one remained in the same spot. http://www.insectidentification.org/insect-description.asp?identification=Black-Horse-Fly

Tabanus atratus, black horse fly. Female. They always remind me of Darth Vadar!

These draw blood on horses...my mare was really good about letting me swat them on her...knew I was not trying to hit her but to kill the fly. Nasty buggers. Nice capture

Eeek! Sure is a vicious looking fly, glad you got the capture from a safe distance.
