No time to think! When you see two pileateds (in this case, Mr. and Mrs.) at a feeder. Grabbed the nearest camera, hopefully locked focus and clicked! Shot from at least 30 feet away from the feeder.
Shortly before this grab I was bemoaning the fate that the Auto ISO which I regularly use in my 7D is pretty much unusable with the 40D. It simply doesn't go high enough to get properly exposed images.
In this case I had turned the ISO down to 200, a setting I rarely use through my grey tinted windows and sliding door. For some reason (bright sun, no doubt) I lucked out. Detail was enhanced with Topaz Adjust HDR filtration.
