_MG_1234 Immature Male Rose Breasted Grosbeak

Yesterday I saw a fleeting glimpse of similar colors and knew I had encountered a bird I hadn't seen before. Today, when I spied this new bird at my feeder, I realized it was what I had seen yesterday. At first I was completely puzzled, but kept going back to the fat beak. From the cobwebs of my brain I pulled out big-beak = grosbeak, so I did some web surfing and decided that the colors fell in between a female and male rose-breasted grosbeak, so perhaps it was a juvenile...and a web search confirmed that it is a male juvenile. It was extremely exciting to add another name to my sighted birds list.

Nice work identifying this young male almost in his adult plumage. Beautiful catch!

What a beauty to add to your list! It must be a juvenile because the rosy bib is not as bright as the one you posted on Flickr. I think the winter birds are starting to arrive so I hope to do more bird shooting as the days progress.
