Canon EF 100-400mm

It was a difficult decision between the 400 f/5.6 and this lens which won out for the greater focal length range. I loved from the first moment I tried it. My first push/pull Canon lens, I found it not difficult at all to use and well balanced on my 20D. I almost sold my 300 f/4L but am glad I didn't because sometimes the smaller apertures of the 100-400 are not adequate for lower light situations...and I would miss the macro capability of the 300. Please note: Bird and squirrel pictures were most likely shot through windows or a sliding glass door. Update: I have sold this lens because I couldn't deal with its weight.

Aw, I'm so tempted by the 100-400... I want a zoom to take with me on hikes, and it looks like this would fit the bill... After all, I usually hike in good light, right? That wren picture is too cute, btw, please put that down - my head explodes from the cuteness! :-D

Do you handhold the lens, or use it primarily on a tripod? I rented the 400mm L for two weeks and am forever spoiled by L glass.

i love my 100-400 as well and it was a hard choice between the 400 prime and the zoom...I keep wanting to try the prime as I hear it is better at shooting birds in flight whereas the zoom seems to miss too often. Of course the prime is sharper as well, esp wide open at f5.6, the zoom doesnt get super sharp until about f7.1. But the zoom has saved me a few times when the subject came too close for 400mm as well as the IS has helped shots in low light at 1/60 sec. So really, its a toss up as to which to get.
