One of the things that I'll remember most from Maui (along with whale songs, sea turtles, volcanoes, fantastic beaches, etc) is the amazingly lush flora, and even when not, the wonderful smells. Often it was impossible to tell where these aromas where coming from and they always seem to appear every few feet when out in nature -- some were very sweet and flowery, some were spicy and other earthy -- sometimes it was a mix. Never were they really overpowering, mainly they subtle even almost subliminal. Hard to describe unless you've experience it. BTW - I have no idea what these are in the photo -- let me know if you do.
