Dense pinewoods cover a large percentage of Scotland although they have been commercially planted for the sole purpose of harvest they are never-the-less a haven for red squirrel. During late winter afternoons the angle of sunlight is so low that it streams in beneath the tree canopy and paints the side of each tree with a line of golden light. The bonus of a thin covering of snow serves to act as a reflector to push additional light into the shadow sides and render texture.
