Autumn Mirror

Loch an Eilean, Cairngorm, Highlands, Scotland.

A very short display of peak Autumn colour with the birch trees ringing Loch an Eilean literaly dripping with gold on a breathlessly still October morning. The following day the winds came and ripped all the leaves off covering the ground in gold coins.

NEW!! Photographic Holidays at TRANSIENT LIGHT.

Pentax 67 II ,55-100 zoom,Fujichrome Velvia
0.45 ND grad at F16 and 1/8 sec full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

Beautiful image captured for all time. Even though the leaves must fall, a photo can preserve the moment forever.

Hi Zane et al, thankyou for your comments. I have a very laid back approach to my landscape photography. I shoot images solely to please myself, my compositions rarely conform to the theoretical ideals, yet I am meticulous in the choices I make. I exploit good light wherever I come across it and actively wait and seek it out if I suspect that there is any likelihood of quality light occurring. I am also very familiar with Velvia, my film of choice and generally exploit it's strengths and avoid it's weaknesses in terms of colour and contrast. I guess I would have to place myself in the intuitive category, as I find it relatively easy to see images that enthrall me and fortunately I seem to be able to convey this to others. With respect to the picture above. The sky was almost featureless a 0.45ND grad was brought down level to the water surface and used to create a reflection that was just marginally darker than the upper half of the image. My initial intention was to crop the sky out completely but in the end I preferred the reflection line of the birch trees in their entirety despite the bright sky. Not perfect I grant you, but satisfying enough and an image I would sooner have captured than left unrecorded. I guess this harkens back to my laid back approach.

Iam; Beautiful scene. Love the composition with the reeds in the forground to balance the bright colors in the trees. Wonderful. V. Lee
