Istanbul Archaeological Museum 1550 Hadrian.jpg

view map

A statue of of a victorious Roman emperor, Hadrian (see message below) originally from Hierapytna in Crete. Victorious, because he is wearing the laurel wreath of victory and has a subjugated barbarian at his feet.

His cuirass is of particular interest because it shows the she-wolf with Romulus and Remus and standing on her back being crowned by winged victories is the Palladium. It is very unusual to find Hadrian in military dress because he did not fight any wars as emperor, only during Trajan's campaigns against the Dacians.

hi dick
your photo number 1550 is a statue of hadrian originally from Hierapytna in Crete and yes! he won because he is wearing the laurel wreath of victory and has a subjugated barbarian at his feet. His cuirass is of particular interest because it show the she-wolf with romulus and remus and standing on her back being crowned by winged victories is the Palladium. It is very unusual to find Hadrian in military dress because he did not fight any wars as emperor, only during Trajan's campaigns against the Dacians. This is great because i am writing a paper about a plaster cast of this statue that was shown in an exhibition in Rome during the Fascist period. If i need to publish it i will let you know.
