Many places round here end in 'hope'.
The origin is Anglo-Saxon meaning side valley and is pronounced 'up'.
Apart from Stannup and Rookup there are
Harehope - Hairup
Middlehope - Midlup
Burnhope - Burnup
Bollihope - Bollyup
and my favourite Shittlehope - Shitlup.
