- 13th May 2005 - Hoodie....... website

There's alot in the press at the moment about gangs wearing hoodie's.
They've been banned from wearing the hoods in shopping centres, along
with baseball caps. So it seemed a good topic tonight on the way back from band.

Update: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/kent/4561399.stm
'Bluewater shopping centre enjoyed a sharp rise in visitor numbers on the first weekend since it banned youths wearing hooded tops and baseball caps.'

and this great story - 'make it part of the school uniform - how uncool would that make it!'

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/devon/4562737.stm

This is in The Street gallery as it is still the street we live in, although at this
point it's called Mannings Lane! This is the point where the M53 motorway crosses it.

The local 'youth' is Christopher humouring his Dad on the way back from band rehearsal!
Quite appropriate as he and his Mum had had a generation gap type discussion on the fashion merits of the hoody last night.

Didn't quite come out like I wanted. Maybe should have gone close-up from below. Or perhaps sent him down into the more poorly lit section - the lights were really bright.
Not sure. But it was 10pm and I couldn't do another collage!

Will try to catch-up with PaDs this weekend :)

I like it a lot

You wouldn't get me NEAR that place, it looks far too spooky!
Now I know what a "hoodie" is! Its a fabulous shot Ian...

What an atmosphere.
Love it!
Guest 19-May-2005 11:45
great shot - great atmosphere and an almost surreal quality.

I think you've judged this just right. Having him at the edge of the photo gives a real sense of someone hanging back. love it.

I can't add anything that hasn't already been said... excellent image. [vote]

strong image, universal one, very symbolistic...could have been taking in many cities....same outfits, same dirty large concrete walls...lost individuals, blocked off....facing a dark tunnel...glad to hear the young man is just posing...
take a picture of him next time doing something "nice" ....feeding, hugging, playing instrument etc..would be
interesting to see his "real" face....have a hard time expressing myself, but maybe you get my drifty direction...:)))
keep up you good work....

Nice one. It doesn't look like you quite had the light for a sinister shadow. I think the spooky thing is you can't see a face.
Guest 15-May-2005 15:33
This came out very well. At first, I thought he was a shadow...or maybe painted on the wall...
cindyd15-May-2005 03:34
It almost looks like he is a painting. Really strange! Cindy

Fantastic shot Ian. I think it's a bit "Grim Reaperish" that makes it scary; though that just proves how intimidating gangs hoodie-wearers can look - though I don't think banning the clothing is any solution..

I came back to visit this. Ray said it so well. That dark figure so far to the edge really makes this a very unsettling photo.

The hooded claw! :-o
Guest 14-May-2005 12:37
speechless.
This is a very strong image. a masterpiece

It looks pretty ominous to me. Glad to hear it was totally innocuous. I think you set the mood perfectly.

I'm pleased to hear this was a setup, Ian as I was thinking you should have started running about 10 minutes ago.
Mindy McNaugher14-May-2005 05:04
Very strong, slightly unnerving image! Wonderfully captured!
jude14-May-2005 01:08
I think it's just perfect too... it DOES balance out the darkness of the unknown to the right. Very well done..
Dan Chusid14-May-2005 00:47
No baseball caps? Pity.....
Coleen Perilloux Landry14-May-2005 00:10
No, Tom Darby, it's not the hoods and caps per se......it's what they stand for.

I think the composition is very good. It really tells a story that is going on in every city right now.
Ray :)14-May-2005 00:03
I think you are right placing him there - he needed to be at one end of the photo for good composition and I don't think he would be powerful enough placed at the dark end on the right. Gets my vote.
Gayle P. Clement14-May-2005 00:01
I'm not sure what you wanted but this is frightening as all heck!
Tor13-May-2005 22:58
I really like the angle and everything about this shot. Ban outfits? That doesn't sound right.
Guest 13-May-2005 22:07
Banning hoodies and baseball caps??
Whats happened to the UK?
I really do like the shot Ian, it has an unnerving feeling about it.
Linda Alstead13-May-2005 22:04
just excellent
Stu13-May-2005 22:03
What about when it's raining! Very urban. I like it.
JeremyGood13-May-2005 21:57
Interesting effect, he blends so well into the wall, almost appears to be painted on it.
Here all the high school kids wear hoodies regardless of the weather. At least it covers up the baggy pants they wear around their knees.
Guest 13-May-2005 21:50
Verrrrrry sinister ... I like the angle he is holding his head, and the way he is watching you, without being recognizable! :)
Sheena Woodhead13-May-2005 21:44
Very strong image and up to the minute. Heard on the news tonight that Meadowhall isn't going to go the same way as Bluewater and banning 'hoodies'. That means I'm okay to wear mine when I go shopping!
Ric Yates13-May-2005 21:42
Great comment on the discussion this week. The photo has a suitably menacing feel about it!
beverley harrison13-May-2005 21:34
this is a very strong image, almost sinister, excellent catch! tones are good too!
John Finlayson13-May-2005 21:31
A shady character indeed !
David Clunas13-May-2005 21:28
The force is strong in this one, have you still got your camera?

Very politically on the ball !
