This picture of a completely content Hawaiian green sea turtle (honu) resting its head over
sun-baked pahoe pahoe lava was taken at the magical Kiholo Bay on the Kohala Coast of
the Big Island. Although basking is unusual for marine turtles, they are now often found
napping on sandy shores of the Hawaiian islands. In recent years, their number has greatly
increased thanks to a rebound in their population from near extinction about 3 decades ago,
adding to the charm of the islands.
