11th March

Clevedon Pier

I had to go to the nearby town of Clevedon today. I've shot this pier quite a few times, see here: http://www.pbase.com/britishbeef/clevedon_pier

The weather today is very grey and cold. The sky over the pier was totally featureless, just grey with no visible cloud at all. I didn't think it would be worth photographing but decided to have a go anyway as I liked the way the pier looked so desolate against the bleak sky. I headed down onto the pebbled beach and further out to a mix of mud and pebbles to get this angle. The result seems to suit B&W quite well.

Beautiful shot Geoff! What a fantastic trip back in time. It is so nicely preserved, I wouldn't of ever guessed you could see such beauty around today. Thanks for sharing.

Nice composition. I like the strong diagonal line leading into the shot. I agree that B&W suits it really well. It has a real period feel to it.

I love piers. Such a shame so many are falling into the sea. All the more reason to photograph them.

And what is the story behind the oriental(?) motif on the structure at the end of the pier?
Guest 11-Mar-2004 18:26

Superb in black and white. My nearest pier is Brighton, still some distance away. Here's a shot of the wrecked one taken on my old point and press camera.
