January 7, 2004

Today was the first sunny day in about a week and I was just amazed at all the shadows. Here's Union Station still in holiday attire.

Edited: Cropped along the lines Ray suggested.

Thanks willie and Jeanne, I'm not going to bother sharpening this nor fix the crop (I did try it). The comments are mentally filed and I'll keep them in mind for future shots.

To add, Mark, the sharpening feature in the camera doesn't work too good, that's why I always do it it PS, but, I have to tell you, I don't see why you need it for this shot?!

Mark - you can go here to see the menu to access your camera's sharpening adjustments. Scroll down the page to the "Manual Record Menu." What PJ said about Photoshop's Unsharp Mask feature definitely still applies, as almost every digital camera will produce "soft" images. This is the case, even when the sharpness is adjusted in camera to the maximum value. I'm told that this is intentional - to allow for fine tuning the degree of sharpness through post-processing, depending on the nature of the subject. When you get your hands on Photoshop, drop me a note and I'll show you how USM works. It's pretty slick.

BTW... whenever you want to know anything about what your camera does or has, go to DPreview. Their camera reviews are so thorough, they're almost a bit nauseating! LOL

Yes listen to Sis - she'll sort you out with PS!! ;)) She has contacts!! Sharp or not it's an interesting image.

Mark, the sharpening thing I was telling you about is in Photoshop, exactly what Patrick mentioned...You need PS, I can probably help you with that soon! :-)

Well spotted! I like this one a lot!

Thanks, Ray. You're right about that crop. I was just so enamored of the blue sky that I didn't want to take it out. Have to think, tighter, tighter. Only the essentials belong.

Yeah, it's not tack sharp. I'll blame the lens. ;) (Hey, it's just a point and shoot!) Jeanne said there was some feature in the camera to sharpen the picture, but I haven't found it. Jeanne, help! I think it would have helped had I zoomed in and made this my original capture, but I was freezing and just wanted to get inside! (ALso, that vision was lacking at the time.) I took three shots and they were all too wide. I was not sure it was really as good a photo as it looked in real life. (This crop is an improvement, but I'm not thrilled. This is the learning part of PAD. Thanks vixys.) That first wreath was so huge and imposing. They're coming down today. So no reshooting.

Mark - I love the repeating patterns, and this is a really good pic. Try cropping the blue sky out to see if it makes it even better. I'm glad you're seeing so many PAD's - are you getting funny looks yet?:-)

MAN, this is a nice find!! Great shot, Mark! I love the perspective of this, the interplay of light and shadow, and the repeating patterns - all very lively. I'm wishing the image was just a little bit sharper, but a dash of unsharp mask in Photoshop would make this thing pop right off the screen. I'm particularly impressed with the detail you can still see in the fully shadowed areas of the ceilings inside - GREAT tonal range. Awfully amazing capture for a quick "stop and shoot!"

Yes, Jeanne. I'm constantly looking at the world as a possible PAD. This one especially grabbed me, the shadows just looked so imposing and were unexpected after four days going by here and not seeing them. I also stopped three times on the way to work. One of those will probably find it's way into vixyswillie's workshop for suggestions. I cropped to improve the composition. I should have zoomed in, but it was very cold and I was already running late.

Great picture of the shadows. Very well done.

Perfect composition. Has it happened to you yet? Where EVERYTHING you see is a possible PaD??
