Palawan-Palawan

Tristaniopsis bilocularis

When we saw these trunks in the forest, we did a double-take because they looked so much like Australian gum trees (eucalypts), but I knew for certain that there were no eucalypts native to Borneo.
Even the leaves hinted of a relationship, so we wondered if they could be in the same plant family - Myrtaceae.
Then we found some labelled: the genus Tristaniopsis is indeed a close relative of Australian eucalypts.

Fascinating to find a eucalypt relative in Borneo. Gorgeous soft trunk colors.

They look massive. And they do look very much like eucalyptus trees.
