Whilst 'The White Hart' is one of Britain's commonest pub names, this inn was previously known as 'The Spread Eagle'.
Hook is situated on the main road between Exeter and London, and this was an old coaching inn, providing accommodation and stables, so a fresh set of horses could be used to haul the old stagecoaches. So it is quite possible that my great great grandmother would have stopped or stayed here whilst travelling up from Exeter to start her new life in London in the 1830s.
