Ailsa Craig –an island 16 km from mainland Scotland, formed originally from the volcanic plug of an extinct volcano.
Colloquially known as Paddy's milestone (as it is about half way between Belfast and Glasgow), it was a haven for Catholics
during the Scottish Reformation in the 16th century. Today it is a bird canctuary, providing a home for huge numbers of gannets
and increasing numbers of puiffins. The island is one of only two sources of a rare type of granite, which is used to made
nearly all curling stones (the other is in Wales)
The island is owned by the Marquess of Ailsa, but is for sale with an asking price over £1.5M.
