This was a tribal dance performance at the Qassim pavilion, which Tim did a one-minute recording of (below). I hope people actually watch it because in addition to the dancers and musicians being very traditional, the spectators (mainly women in hijab), soldiers standing guard and religious police (with loose headscarf) wandering by are all interesting for a glimpse of life here.
There of course was segregated seating for the show, and Tim said the muttawa (religious police) had shooed him away from where he was filming because he was too close to the women’s section. I was over with the women but was told I couldn’t stand where I wanted by a soldier, so it was hard to get decent shots of this. I don’t know how the woman on the right managed to get away without wearing an abaya and headscarf, especially since the muttawa were everywhere (and even had a display on the grounds), but they seemed more interested in keeping the sexes apart than hassling improperly dressed foreigners.
The performance, posted earlier.
