In 1992 the Blue Lagoon Company was established and the bathing facility was opened to the public. The warm waters are rich in minerals such as silica and sulphur.
Water temperature averages around 38C (100F). The lagoon is actually man-made, fed by water from the nearby geothermal power plant, and is renewed every two days.
