Finally two of us found the male Black-backed. My friend had found it earlier, but this is my first sighting of the male this winter. It was quite accommodating and seemed almost oblivious to our presence. It just kept pecking/banging away, occasionally hopping from tree to tree. After about 20 minutes it flew off. By that time our fingers were frozen anyway, so we were happy to be on our way.
On the way back to our cars, we spotted and trailed a Barred Owl for a while, but it eluded us this time, so no shots.
