High above the Chain Bridge is this imposing and iconic statue of St Gellért.
Gellért (Gerard, in English) was a Benedictine Abbot who was pursuaded by King Stephen to help him convert the pagan Magyars to Christianity.
After Stephen's death in 1046, those who wanted to return to paganism threw him into a barrel pierced with nails and rolled it down this steep hill,
which subsequently became known as Gellért Hill. The monument was erected in 1904.
