Your collection is amazing Walter. The various characters remind me of the English Comedia de Arte and even somewhat, Shakespeare. From my study of clown makeup, the "whiteface" (white paint) across cultures symbolizes death (the blood has been drained out, so to speak; can also represent holiness (dying to self). The red face would appear to symbolize raw life.
It is interesting how the clown looks across cultures. When I was doing workshops in clown, puppetry, and storytelling, we often had Oriental participants and their visions for the arts were always a nice addition.
